Herpes on finger. Close-up of blisters (also known as whitlow) on the fingers of a 48 year-old woman caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) infection. A whitlow causes the finger to swell and become extremely painful and sensitive to touch. The blisters are teeming with virus particles and therefore extremely infectious. HSV1 is one of two types of herpes infection. It is usually associated with the lips, mouth and face. In rare cases, the virus causes herpetic whitlow on the fingers, as seen here. The only treatment is by the application of antiviral drugs.
