Ashway Memorial Cross, near Dovestone Reservoir.
The cross bears the following inscription on the side overlooking Ashway Gap. "HERE BY THE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF A GUN JAMES PLATT ESQ MP FOR OLDHAM LOST HIS LIFE 27 AUGUST 1857". Platt was a local man, from the textile machine manufacturing family of the village of Dobcross, and had only been elected MP earlier in 1857.
