The clerk who w^rote it signs himselfRowland Chambers, with a handsome amount of vicar is Edward Mandevell by whom some of the itemsare inserted, though in Chambers hand. There is a dot-ted p against 17 of the of those buried beforeJuly, 15S2, evidently the plague; and during the years1595-96-97, +b frequently occurs; presumably meaningblack sickness. The names of places mentioned are numer-ous, and in several instances offer striking explanationsof the present names. I have appended a list of these and. REGISTER BOOK OF HOLME CULTRAM. 177 and also of the surnames in the register The number ofnames remaining still in the place and neighbourhood isremarkable. There are many curious aliases, but few ornone of any special interest. Visitations are mentioned as having taken place atCarlisle on July 5th, 1580 ; at Calbecke in 15S8 when ex-pense was incurred; and at Isell in 1594 which cost them5s. id. Other general visitations are mentioned withoutnaming the place at which they were held. I will first give an instance of parish accounts as thenkept—followed by such interesting items in those accountsas seem worth notin.
