The captain, Sergeant Winn, of Sheffield, proceeded to the target and attacked it on three engines. On the return journey, the port engine which had shown signs of excessive vibration failed while leaving the French coast. The captain decided to land at a Norfolk airfield when the starboard outer engine temperature went up, and oil pressure dropped. When the aircraft was circling the pilot found that the undercarriage would not come down and as the aircraft was then only about 100 ft. and flying on one good and one failing engine, there was no time to bring down the undercarriage by hand. The aircraft was crash-landed on the airfield. This was Sergeant Winn's seventeenth operational trip.
