Suborbital space suit. Model wearing the first commercially available suborbital (100 km altitude) space suit, known as the 'IS3C'. The IS3C is pressurised, lightweight (20 kilograms) and manoeuvrable. An integrated cooling system prevents the wearer from overheating and a restraining layer within the fabric protects against the effects of massive acceleration, measured in G forces. The suit incorporates sensors which monitor vital signs such as blood pressure and a 15-minute backup supply of oxygen. The helmet contains point of view cameras so wearers can record their experience. In the background is SpaceShipOne, the first private spacecraft to reach suborbital altitude and win the Ansari X-Prize in 1994. Photographed in 2007.
