Battle of Sokolovo depicted in the bas relief on the base of the Monument to Otakar Jaroš by Czech sculptor Oskar Kozák (1958) in Mělník in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. The Battle of Sokolovo took place in March 1943 next to okolovo near Kharkiv (now in Ukraine), when the on-going attack of the Wehrmacht was delayed by joint Soviet and Czechoslovak forces. Czech military officer Otakar Jaroš was killed in the Battle of Sokolovo and became the first member of a foreign army decorated with the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, which was the highest decoration in the USSR.
