John Barclay Dunham, formerly an extensivemanufacturer of pianos, was born in the city ofNew York, April 2, 1799. His father died whenhe was a child, and he learned the trade of a cabinet-maker, at which he worked for many years. About1834 he commenced the manufacture of pianos, as amember of the firm of Stoddard, Wooster & Dunham,their establishment being at the corner of ThirdAvenue and Fourteenth Street. A manufactory wassubsequently built on Thirteenth Street, near theBowery. The business was afterward removed toOne Hundred and Fifty-sixth Street, and here he con-tinued it till his death, which occurred February 9,1873. It was maintained by his sons till the recentopening of Morris Avenue, which destroyed part ofthe building. Mr. Dunham was one of the five menwho founded the Chatham Bank, and one of the firstdirectors.
