Why do pigs love mud? Pigs cannot sweat, and therefore cannot keep themselves cool like we humans can. Mud helps suffocate parasites and lice, and also serves as a natural sun block to keep the hot sun off of their bodies. It is a biothermal response to their lack of ability to dissipate heat; they emerse themselves in the mud if there is not a large round tub of cool water for them to bathe themselves in, or if it is too dry for any mud to be found. Pigs do not have any sweat glands therefore cannot sweat and that is why they roll in mud to cool them down.
