I went from Grass Lake toFort Halt, Kentucky, across the river from Cairo,arriving there about the middle of October. DoctorKendall was in charge of the hospital, and I servedunder him all the time I was with the army. We all lived in tents, and used one for a hospital,imtil !N^ovember, when they built cabins for winterquarters. A room was prepared for the sick, and wegot along very well till some time in January, whenthe water rose and covered the ground so that no onecould get out at all who did not wear cavalry we
