Genoa, one of the main Italian ports, is located in northern Italy, between the sea and the Apennines. A maritime centre already in the 5th century BC, Genoa had intense relations with the Greek, Etruscan and Punic world. It was for a long time under the Byzantine and later under the Longobard domination, but its great expansion began after the year 1000, when it became a powerful maritime republic and extended its mercantile and military dominion over most of the Mediterranean.
