Andreas Hofer, a Tyrolean innkeeper/patriot, led forces against Franco-Bavarian troops—started War of the Fifth Coalition.

Andreas Hofer (1767-1810), a Tyrolean innkeeper and patriot in Austria, led the forces against Napoleon in the War of the Third Coalition that met defeat by France under Napoleon. In 1809 he became the leader of the forces against the Franco-Bavarian troops, which, in turn, started the War of the Fifth Coalition. He was captured after his neighbor turned him in and executed in Mantua, Italy, by a firing squad in 1810. This illustration shows him being led to his death.
