Sparrenberg Castle - Bielefeld, Germany


The keep (donjon) of Sparrenberg Castle. Sparrenberg Castle (Sparrenburg) is a fortress in the Teutoburg Forrest located over the city of Bielefeld. It is one of the major sights and picknick spots of Bielefeld and was build in the 11th century by Graf Ludwig von Ravensberg (Earl of Ravensberg). The main purpose of the castle was to protect the town and control an important road that connected the western and eastern parts of the german empire. On top of the keep the traditional flag of Bielefeld and the Grafen von Ravensberg (Earls of Ravensberg), three red spares on a white ground.
