Near one of the crossings of Indian Creek, about Vl milesfrom Cumherland Gap, is said to have occurred the IncHan attackupon Boones party, of October 1778 when his son James Boone andsix otlier meml)ers of the party were killed, a disaster so great thatthe party was compelled to abandon the trip to Kentucky.^. Residence in Lower Powell Valley, on Wilderness Road Twelve miles from Martins Station and 6 miles from Cumber-land Gap was Big Spring. From Boones Path to Cumberland Gap down Powell Valleywas the best stretch of the VSilderness Road. Here the travelerpassed down a fertile wide rolling valley with the high rugged ridgeof Cumberland Mountain close at hand. The mountain rangedominates the scenery and, as William Brown vividly described it,affords a wild romantic prospect.
