Vimy Ridge is the place on the first world war battlefields where Canadian soldiers are remembered. They fought their major battle here between the ninth and fourteenth April 1917, they lost 3,498 Killed and 7,104 Wounded in fighting to gain Hill 145 and so break the Germans The Hindenburg Line. It was said to be a turning point in the war when the Canadian's defeated the Bavarian soldiers of Crown Prince Rupprecht's army. So much so that it earned the Canadians a seat at the Peace talks held at Versailles. After the war a massive memorial was raised here to the whole Canadian army, the architect was Edwin Lutyen, and opened in 1936 by King Edward VIII. The picture shows an ooold boot that was left behind in the trenches.
