Here is a nearly ripe field of wheat by the Thames close to Sandford Lock, awaiting the tender mercies of the combine harvester. Common-law footpaths split the field like a dagger through the endless gold colour, beneath a deep midsummer sky. A few days after this shot, it was all gone - and only scruffy stubble was left.
