Picture by Roger Bamber 2 October 2006 Engineer Martin Nutter drives his perfect replica of a 1902 Stanley Locomobile Spindleseat runabout steamcar through Normans Bay near Eastbourne East Sussex He has spent six years painstakingly recreating the vehicle from scratch in every spare moment from his day job working on forklift trucks It is insured for 20 000 and he says the design is remarkably environmentally friendly running on a tiny amount of diesel and regular top ups of tap water It can cruise at 30mph and uses a unique monotube generator system which means that unlike most steam powered cars there is no danger of the boiler exploding Now he plans to drive it from Lands End to John O Groats to prove that it is a viable vehicle not just a curiosity
