Salicylic acid preventsputrefactive processes, andis therefore used to pre-sence food substances, andalso to saturate surgicalwool, lint, and other dress-ings. It has no odor, likecarbolic acid, but beingnon-volatile it is not so ef-ficient as the latter. Ex-ternally it is used in oint-ments to check various skinaffections due to bacteria,and since it has in additiona softening action on theSassafras Surface of the skin, salicylic.
