This shellis our representative of a large number of tropi-cal species of similar form, some of which arevery strong, and as long as your hand. Figure 139 also shows our rep-resentative of a large genus ofshells, most of which are found intropical seas. Its name is Gonuscalifornicus, Hds., the CaliforniaCone. While large and beautifulspecimens of the Cone-shells arefound in the warm water of the Pa-cific and Indian oceans, our littlespecies is very humble, being about an inch inlength, while its surface is of a sombre chestnutcolor, though one may be found occasionally thathas a brown, hairy epidermis. Specimens of this. Fig. 139, X I MARINE UNIVALVES 157 shell are most common on the coast of southernCalifornia. Figure 140 represents theshell of the rare and beautifulPleurStoma carpenteridna. Gabb, Carpenters Notched-side, (Surcula carpenteriana)This shell is spindle-shaped,with a conical spire, whichslopes with the utmost grace tothe apex, a long aperture, andan outer lip which has thecharacteristic notch near itsjunction with the whorl. Theshell is markedwith many finelines of growth,each of whichretains the pecu-liar notch. The p,^ ,,,ocolor is reddish yellow, whichis set oif by numerous narrow, re-volving stripes of reddish length of a good sized specimenis three inches. This species livesoff the coast of California, and mostof the specimens have been obtainedby dredging. F
