Brown, Gillespie & Co. on one oc-casion chartered a vessel and broughtout a cargo of Mediterranean goods ofall kinds, which were offered at publicauction. The sale lasted three days, at-tracting great attention of the were buyers present from as fareast as Monteal. On one occasion they chartered a smallvessel in Liverpool, of a size able to passthrough the St. Lawrence canals and de-liver her cargo at Hamilton. The cargo. ADAM BROWN Postmaster of the City of Hamilton, who in the early days was associated with Balfour. Smye & Company. was comnosed principally of rice, sodaash and heavy goods. Brown, Gillespie & Co. were the firstto introduce Canadian cheese commer-cially in England. Mr. Brown, who wasmaking an extended visit to England in1865, personally visited all the large cen-tres of trade there, and secured ordersfor cheese from the principal firms,many of whom a few years afterwardswere specially represented in he left for England he inducedthe late Adam Oliver, of Ingersoll, tostart a factory for making cheese boxes,so that by the time orders taken reachedHamilton the cheese maker could getboxes, and the orders were promptlyfilled. In 1890 the firm of Balfour & Co. wasformed and consisted of the late Balfour, the late W. B. Croy, andJames Somerville, the latter now Ham-ilton representative of the Canada Sugar Refinery and other leading manufactur-ing concerns.
