Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) nuclear fusion reactor research, view of the microwave heating devices. The W7-X is an experimental nuclear fusion reactor of a type known as a stellarator. The aim is to create nuclear fusion of hydrogen, such as occurs in stars. This type of fusion reactor uses superconducting magnetic fields to contain the super-heated plasma as it undergoes fusion. The early plans for this reactor date from the 1990s, but construction was not completed until 2014. The first operational phase began in 2015, with tests continuing aimed at the steady-state operation phase in 2019. The project is run jointly by a range of collaborating institutes in the European Union, the USA and Japan. It is located in Greifswald, Germany. Photographed in 2017.
