View SE of the Taxing Stone, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, UK, said to mark the grave of Alpin, a king of the Scots of Dalriada, killed in 741 in Glenapp just over a mile to the NNW. The name Alpin mac Echdach may refer to an C8th Alpin (I), &/or to Alpin II who died fighting the Picts in Galloway in the mid C9th. Alpin II was the father of Kenneth mac Alpin (Kenneth I), king of Scots 840-47 & then first king of the Scots & Picts (the combined kingdom of Alba) 847-58. The traditional story connected to the stone is that 'Alpin' invaded & conquered most of Galloway but was eventually forced to flee. While fording a stream at the entrance to Glenapp surrounded by his bodyguards "a single man sprang upon him & struck him lifeless from his charger." The Taxing Stone is on the Loch Ryan Coastal Path, it was a boundary marker & toll point between the old kingdoms of Galloway & Carrick. Graffiti on the E face include the date 1720.
