Checking wheat for weevils. Technician setting up a system to provide early warning of infestation of a wheat store by weevils. A weevil (one seen in the magnified view at lower left) is a small beetle that infests a wide range of plants and crops. Grain weevils infest and damage stored grain, using the mandibles at the end of their elongated snout to cut through the shell of a wheat grain and gain access to the food within. Females lay their eggs inside wheat grains in order that their larvae can have a food supply. This is an EWD P3 (portable version) from Systelia Technologies (France). It uses acoustic technology to detect the sounds made by the weevils.
