He had an active brain, a very retentivememory, and was a sound logician. He hadread widely and thoroughly; and no topic ofgeneral conversation found him without someknowledge of the subject, or correlated services were always much sought in localaffairs, as selectman of his town, as delegate toconventions, chairman of town meetings andof public gatherings of all kinds. He was amember of the State Legislature in 1843 andwas returned to that body in 1879. In 1854he was in the State Senate and was a memberof the committee on Engrossed Bills and chair-.
