A Victorian pre-decimal British copper coin worth one penny. It featured Brittania holding a trident and sitting on a union jack (union flag) shield. To her left is a lighthouse (many lighthouses , Eddystone, were allowed to extract a penny toll from each passing ship to pay for their building costs and maintenance. To her right is a sailing ship. The front of the coin showed the monarch's is a cultural icon and was used as an emblem of British maritime power and unity.
