Tunnel Beach, Dunedin

Tunnel Beach draws its name from the passageway that allows access to a secluded beach on the opposite side of the sandstone cliff. Local legend is says that local politician, John Cargill, had the tunnel hand-carved in the 1870s as a birthday present for his daughters, to give them a private beach away from the prying eyes at St. Clair Beach.
