Leon Trotsky, exiled Russian Communist leader, arriving in Paris, c1933. Trotsky (1879-1940) was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union in 1929 after he led a campaign of opposition to the policies of Joseph Stalin. He was offered asylum in France in 1933, remaining there until 1935.
