In the time ofPtolemy, this district was inhabited by the Menapii, whose chief city, Menapia,was the site of the present town of Wexford. The extreme southern point—the peninsula of Hook, is, in the opinion of some writers, the Hieron Promon-toinum, sacred promontory, of the Grecian geographer. Its present name isderived from the Danes, who, having devastated the surrounding country, made apermanent settlement, the centre of which was Waesfiord (West-Haven).
