Lion Bridge & Alnwick Castle: heavily restored Border fortress dating back to Norman times, home to the Dukes of Northumberland.

Lion Bridge & Alnwick Castle: heavily restored Border fortress dating back to Norman times, home to the Dukes of Northumberland. Stiff-tailed lion on bridge spanning the River Aln is a symbol of the Percy family who owned the castle in the 1300s: Harry Hotspur was born here. Yvo de Vescy, first Norman Baron of Alnwick, built the earliest parts of the present castle around 1096. Main restoration work carried out 1854-6 by the 4th Duke.
