In 1805 occurred Burrs Insurrection. He took possession of abeautiful island in the Ohio, after the killing of Hamilton, and is chargedby many with attempting to set up an independent government. Hisplans were frustrated by the general government, his property confiscatedand he was compelled to flee the country for safety. 72 THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY. In January, 1807, Governor Hull, of Michigan Territory, made atreaty with the Indians, whereby all that peninsula was ceded to theUnited States. Before the close of the year, a stockade was built aboutDetroit.
