Alfred the Great (849 – 899AD ) was King of Wessex from 871 to 899. Just before the Battle of Ashdown that took place in Berkshire on 8 January 871, Alfred then a prince of only 21, disguised himself as a minstrel and entered the Viking camp. He later led the army of his brother, King Ethelred of Wessex, in a victorious battle against the invading Danes (Vikings).
