Triple quadrupole mass spectroscopy. Close-up of the 'torch box' area of a triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) facility. The sample is ionised in a plasma and the elements present are identified by their mass. Mass spectroscopy is the use of strong magnetic and electric fields to ionise samples and separate them by mass and charge. Photographed in 2015, at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
