A complete report of this work mav be found in Scientific Agriculture 31 :286-315, July, 1951. Barley The barley acreage in Nova Scotia is increasing rapidly primarily becauseof increased seedings of mixed grain. Approximately 6,000 acres of barleyand 10,000 acres of mixed oats and barley are produced annually. Root rot caused by Helminthosporium sativum, has been observed in theprovince for several years. Until 1951, however, the damage caused by thedisease was slight and of little economic importance. In that year and again in1952 numerous fields were seriously affected by this Figure 5. Different varieties show varying degrees of resistance to disease, this plot of(Mli barley is severely infected by root rot. Barley Breeding The main objective of the barley breeding program ;ii this farm is tocombine strength of straw, resistance to loose smul and rool rot, and high types which thresh readily are given preference in the selectionprogram. Si rain \-( 13-13 was selected from a hybrid composite of 32 si rong-sl rawedvarieties. It has smooth awns, high yield, and exceptionally strong straw. Several hybrids designed toincorporate resistance to loose smut and root rot into N-C13-13 are now understudy in the Maritime Provinces. Strain 394-1-X7 was selected from a cross between Montcalm and Olli. Ithas demonstrated high yielding ability and good strength of straw; its smoothawns
