Maine; Calais, Saint Croix Island International Site, Bronze Passamaquoddy Indian, Ivan Schwartz, Studio EIS, Calais, Maine US

Saint Croix island, in the St Croix River between the US State of Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, was the site of the first attempted settlement in North American by the French under the command of Pierre Degua, the Seiur de Mons, and Samuel de Champlain. The 1605 settlement was a failure but an international memorial to the settlers is located on the Maine shore overlooking the island. This image shows a bronze statue of a Passamaquoddy Indian offering food to the settlers during the time of their privation. The bronze was installed ca 2003 and was created by Studio EIS, Ivan Schwatrz, sculptor. St Croix Island International Site is in Calais, Maine.
