He was appointed a member ofthe Paid Department in 1ST0, and as-signed to Engine Company No. !]; hewas promoted assistant foreman, andtransferred to Engine Company No. assistant foreman of this com-pany, ho was buried for four hours ;iia tire which occurred in Duane on lu. advanced to the]. SHORT. became attached to Engine Company No. 28, where he wasposition of foreman, and transferred to Engine Company appointed chief, and assigned to the command of the Second Batallion, where he served fornearly three years, and was then trans-ferred to the Fourth Batallion. It waswhile in command of this batallion thathe met his tragic death, which is stillfresh in the memory of all. While driv-ing 1o a fire his wagon collided withan engine, throwing him out ; be diedtwo hours later. His funeral was agrand sight ; his batallion marched tothe ferry, as did Veteran and Volun-teer Firemens Association. His wagonwas covered with a black pall, and hisfire-hat upon the seat, with a bouquetlying by the side of it.
