Back muscles. Computer artwork of the shoulder joint showing bones (cream), nerves (yellow) and muscles (pink). The muscles across the top of the shoulder is the supraspinatus muscle. It acts to stabilise the shoulder joint and move the arm sideways away from the body. The muscles across the shoulder blade (scapular) is the infraspinatus muscle. It acts to stabilise the shoulder joint and externally rotate the arm. The large sheet of muscle across the back that attaches to the humerus (upper arm bone) is the latissimus dorsi muscle. It acts to medially rotate the arm and move it sideways and forwards away from the body.
