The work is being published by earnestly commend it to our patriotic citi-zens. No public library should be without it andit will be found a pleasant companion on thehome-table, and a proper stimulant of a nationalsentiment in the hands of the rising generation. w #^. ii®:(!iiiE ^^ i MAGAZINE OF AMERICAN HISTORY Vol. IV FEBRUARY 1880 No. 2 THE LETTERS OF WASHINGTON THE publication of unpublished documents and letters of Washing-ton was begun in the February and continued in the Augustnumber of the Magazine, last year (1879). In addition to someimportant public papers, eighty-nine letters from his pen or under hissignature were then first printed. They covered a period from 1754 tothe close of the year 1780, were printed in the order of their dates,and were numbered from I to LXXXIX. After mature consideration it has been decided to adhere to the sameorder of chronological arrangement, and of numbering, until all letters ofdates subsequent to those already printed and prior to the close of theRevolution have been made public.
