But for diagnostic purposes it is surely no smalladvantage to obtain the best possible view of the object to beexauiined. and if lesions be detected requiring operations of anykind, an ordinary form of speculum can be employed. In such acase, however, the previous inspection of the parts through amagnifying lens is a decided gain. Bruntons speculum helps toluake diaonosis more easv and more accurate ; it is of course some-what more expensive than a set of simple specula, but the difference. Politzer* remarks thatthis (Bruntons) speculum is more troublesome to use than the ordi-nary form on account of the difficulty of concentrating the lightupon the membrana tympani. Any difficulty of this kind is,however, soon mastered by a little practice in the use of theinstrument. With regard to all specula, it must be rememberedthat their introduction sometimes causes a troidjlesome reflexcough, owing to irritation of the auricular branch of the pneumo-gastric nerve. The more simple forms of Specula are too well kno\Mi to require minute description.
