Canadian grocer April-June 1918 . w Have You Faced These Problems or How Should They be Faced? THE problem of the clerks businessrelationship to the store has agreat many phases and all of themare interesting and all important. Theyare matters that differ with the differentcircumstances of the merchant, butevery phase of the subject is of Quebec merchant has asked us toplace before the readers of CANADIANGROCER the following three questions, and to ask for an open discussion. Thisis done herewith in the belief that theQuebec merchant has introduced a dis-cussion that should provide some itemsof great value in the study of the clerkin his relation to the store. Sending in Answers It is the wish of the management ofthis paper that every merchant shouldconsider these problems, and write anaccount of his practice in these mattersor should suggest what he considers isthe right practice, and why he so con-siders it. But it is also hoped that theclerks themselves will consider thesematters and will also write of them. from their own viewpoint. Let us haveyour opinion, then, on these three ques-tions. Here Are the Questions Is it customary and advisable to giveclerks the private cost price mark formerchandise ? Is it a general practice to allow aclerk to serve himself to goods, makeout check for same himself and takehome the goods without acquainting theproprietor other than by the counterchecks ? What is the proper way to han-dle this part of the business so that agood clerk would not feel that there wasany suspicion of his honesty? Some merchants allow their clerksgoods at cost price plus 10 per cent, forfreight; is this the general practice? This isnt Venice, it is Bridge Street, Belleville, Ontario, on March 20th, the day of the spring flood. In the centre of the photo is seen the store of E. A. Kellaway. The day previous Mr. Kellaway had taken in 100 bags of sugar and two barrels of powdered sugar. Most of this was a complete loss. SMALL FRUIT OUTLOOK IMPROVES
