Meteorite section. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a chondrule from a stony meteorite (chondrite). Meteorites are chunks of rock which fall to Earth from space. Chondrites constitute about 85% of all meteorites. They are character- ised by the presence of chondrules, small spheres of silicate minerals a few millimetres across. The small holes (black) running from upper left to centre here were made by a secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). This device allows the compo- sition of the meteorite to be determined. Study of meteorites can give information on the history of the solar system. Magnification unknown.
