Uponcooling, the mass solidifies as ingotsof alundum. Beautiful crystals arefound in the center of these masses,showing nearly all the variety of colorsfound in the ruby and sapphire, ofwhich alundum is one variety. Bauxite, the raw material fromwhich alundum is made, is the purestnaturally occurring amorphous oxideof aluminum known.
