One figure holds a jar of sake on a tray. Another figure holds the Shinto prayer staff with eight pieces of folded white paper, in reference to the eight-headed dragon that Susanoo slayed to redeem himself after a fall from grace. The poet Sanj?-in was emperor of Japan between 1012 and 1016, when he was forced to abdicate. He composed this poem invoking the moon shortly thereafter, before his death the following year. In his choice of imagery, Hokusai seems to suggest that the poet may have been praying for a heroic deed like Susanoos that would similarly reinstate his position as emperor.'
