The latter was appointed, September11, 1777; he entered the Continental army as third lieutenant in ColonelThompsons battalion and rose to the rank of captain in the First Pennsyl-vania regiment, but resigned on the 20th of October, 1777, and engaged inmercantile pursuits at Baltimore.
