Today’s Whitley’s Shopping Centre, the department store was created first by William Whiteley, who started a drapery shop in 1863 which expanded in to row of shops by 1867 only to be damaged by fire in 1897. The building architecture was designed by John Belcher and John James Joass and open for trading by the Lord Mayor of London in 1911 providing also luxurious entertaiment, ofiices and traning spaces.
