American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), Hall County, Georgia. The ripened berries of the American beautyberry. American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a native plant in the southeast. During the fall the plant produces clusters of purple berries which are a favorite food of deer, and many species of birds. The berries are edible in moderate amounts and are used in Jellies and jams. The plant (leaves) has some value as an insect repellant.
