Ellen Ochoa, NASA astronaut, born 1958. She graduated from San Diego State University in 1980. She earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1985, specialising in optical systems for information processing. She became an astronaut in July 1991, and has flown on four shuttle missions. Her most recent flight was as a mission specialist on mission STS-110 in April 2002. This involved Shuttle Atlantis visiting the International Space Station (ISS). Dr Ochoa, along with ISS crewmembers, operated the station's robotic arm for construction and to move spacewalking astronauts. Photographed in February 2002.
