While quite similar in general appearance to dentaius, this species differs in many ways. It is smaller, deeper, has fewer scales, much fewer maxillary teeth, a smaller mouth and different color. The anal in the male with hooks on practically all the developed rays, is quite different from that of A. dentatus, which has hooks on only the rays of the lobe. 9. Aphyocharax avary Fowler.
