Meimei-an is a teahouse and Japanese garden associated with Lord Fumai Matsudaira who was a lord of the Matsue domain. Fumai was a person of refined taste and master of the tea ceremony and founded the Fumai-ryu tea ceremony school. Meimei-an was built to Lord Fumai’s liking in 1779. The teahous has a thick thatched roof and a room of two tatami mats with a place for a sunken hearth. Japanese gardens are frequently associated with tea ceremony, and called “tea gardens” although their purpose is to get visitors in the mood for the tea ceremony itself, rather than a garden visit in itself.
