The Waecamaw River system in South and North Carolina is of the same origin as the St. Marys. It is completely on the Wicomico and Chowan formations and has a typical coastal assemblage of Unioni- dae (Table 2), but it is remarkable in having an endemic species, E. uaccomo- ivensis. Among the small river systems of more recent origin on the Coastal Plain in the Apalachicolan region in which Unionidae have been found are the Econfina and the Wasassasa.
