Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is a huge steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River over millions of years exposing nearly two billion years of geologic history. The area has been continuously in habited by Native Americans who built settlements and many of whom consider the canyon a holy place. President Theodore Roosevelt visited in 1903 and later designated the Grand Canyon as a National Park. Despite opposition from land and mining claim holders, it was designated a National Park in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson. The most incredible thing about the Grand Canyon is the vistas of this gigantic ditch that Mother Nature has carved in the rock using the flowing waters of the Colorado River. She has revealed the layers of sediment that were laid down when this part of America was actually an inland sea.
