Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a German explorer, scientist, and natural philosopher. His expedition to Cuba, Central and South America (1799-1804), noted for systematic observations, initiated an era of scientific exploration. In his Cosmos, he tried to formulate known facts about the universe into a overall concept of nature that was uniform. Traveling with him to the Spanish colonies in South America was Aime Bonpland, a French doctor and botanist.
